Shaw Contract partnered with THW Design to create custom carpets for a functional, yet comfortable residential design foundation in the new memory care, assisted living, and independent living expansion at Plymouth Harbor on Sarasota Bay. Used throughout the public spaces of the new community, the carpet aids in making both residents and staff more comfortable.
Easy-to-maintain carpet anchors this continuing care retirement community design in the soothing color palette of the surrounding Gulf Coast waters, adding to the overall quiet, serene living experience.

Sensory warmth and design
Plymouth Harbor Continuing Care Retirement Community embraces the artistic culture of Sarasota and the expansive views of the Florida Gulf Coast town. A recent expansion of
the CCRC lead community leaders to rethink traditional assisted living and memory care during the remodel and embrace the textural beauty of the surrounding environment.
THW Design in Atlanta was tasked with providing assisted living and memory care residents the same resort-style amenities and lifestyle available in the existing independent living community, which opened in 1966 and grew over time to a 17.5 acre CCRC development. Embodying the mid-century modern style of the nearby Sarasota School of Architecture, the Plymouth Harbor three-story building addition creates a unique building layout. Resident community spaces orient toward sunny bay-front views, encouraging socialization in gathering spaces such as the stunning two-story dining area.
In this grand hotel-like space, window glazing systems and motorized blinds divert exposure from the sun and water reflections, while the custom Shaw Contract solution dyed nylon carpet withstands direct year-round sun exposure.
The sound-absorbing carpet, ceiling planks and draperies abate noise levels entering from the two-story open atrium into the dining area. Additionally, simple hot-water extraction aids in carpet ease-of-maintenance in the dining area and throughout the community public spaces.
Shaw Contract carpets, which were customized to fit the unique floor plan, offer soothing waterside color palettes of blues and greens. The lush, hotel-like carpet designs add sensory warmth while anchoring seating areas and creating wayfinding throughout the public spaces. This is especially evident in the bright and cheerful dining and living room of the new memory care unit where residents gather more frequently in social settings.
The same custom carpeting is used throughout the new building, while the memory care carpet has a moisture barrier. The patterns in this area are more subtle with less contrast to deter common depth perception issues prevalent with memory care residents.
The abundant natural light and waterfront views support residents’ circadian rhythms for healthier sleep cycles, better moods and overall improved quality of life, benefiting not only
residents but providing peace of mind to their friends, families and community staff.
