A journey of connection and craft.
Russell McVeagh’s refreshed Wellington practice reflects the leading law firm’s commitment to excellence, longevity and investment in their people, clients, brand and Wellington.
Presented with the opportunity to move to three contiguous floors within Wellington’s NTT Tower, the transformed workplace is a beacon for attracting and retaining talent, reinforcing Russell McVeagh’s position as a leader in their field.
Global workplace design and construction specialists, Unispace, in association with Emma Hofmann, created a destination for Russell McVeagh’s people and clients. The workplace reconnects all practice groups and shared services, facilitating a vibrant, welcoming and comfortable experience for all.
The interior design blends elevated residential elements within the office environment, creating a grounded, tactile feel. At the heart of the space is a bespoke helictical staircase, crafted from timber, polished plaster and rolled aged-brass. This provides ease of circulation between floors for partners, staff and client, enabling an equality of access to all areas of the workplace.
Creating a space to foster community and culture was vital to the success of the new workplace. The café breakout is an accessible, gravitational space for all Russell McVeagh employees and doubles as an informal meeting area throughout the day. The workplace supports meaningful engagement and connection between users, drawing people together within a comfortable environment. Diversity and inclusion considerations were strongly interwoven into the design, taking the unique needs of all users into consideration.
A key stand-out component of this project is the level of collaboration between several talented and creative craftspeople, to combine various elements of design into one cohesive environment.
Close partnerships were established with local New Zealand businesses:
- Lucy McMillan, Studio Lucy McMillan – collection of ceramic sculptures
- Matthew Kennedy, Interlink – salvaged timber posts
- Henry Wilson, Studio Henry Wilson – designed handcrafted bronze wall sconces
- Yuka O’Shannesy, Public Record - curated gallery objects
- Jeremy Price, Rivet Fabricate – fabrication of feature spiral stair
The result is a unique and layered interior. Each piece has been carefully curated to tell a story, celebrating the talent, creativity and people behind the craft. This interior not only functions as a workplace but also a warm and comfortable space that supports the wellbeing of Russell McVeagh’s employees, clients, and community.
