How Soundscapes Impact Our Well-Being and Productivity

The rhythmic clicks of typing, the occasional beep of machinery or the constant hum of an air conditioner - every commercial environment has a unique “soundscape”.

A pleasant soundscape can positively impact our engagement, whilst a negative soundscape can be harmful to our daily lives.

There are three primary acoustics tests utilised. How do they each impact the built environment?

Impact Insulation Class (IIC) rating illustration

The amount of sound that is transferred through a flooring assembly from an upper to lower room. Measured in decibels across a range of frequencies. The lower the number the better. Particularly relevant in settings such as hotels and student accommodation, where the amount of noise transmitted between building floors should be minimised. Test standard: EN ISO 10140-3, ISO 717-2

Airborne sound transmission class illustration

An STC (Sound Transmission Class) rating shows how well a flooring system reduces airborne noise travelling from one room to another. Sounds such as conversations, music or a dog barking can travel through the floor and ceiling structure, affecting the acoustic environment in the room below. A higher STC rating means better reduction of airborne noise.

Sound Absorption Average (SAA) flooring feature illustration

The amount of sound energy absorbed by a material. Measured across 18 frequencies, between 100 Hz and 5,000 Hz, to give an overall class rating. Test standard: EN ISO 354/11654
